UNLUCKY, HILARY?

At the start of the Obama administration with a very inexperienced President, the world knew the State department was in a safe pair of hands.  Hilary Clinton had seen all parts of the diplomatic and political world both in the US and abroad, so smiles all round, back to the good old days of Kissinger and Madeleine Albright, she would be feted in every capital.

So what has gone wrong?  Where are the grand treaties, the diplomatic coups, peace in the middle east, again! No, disasters in every sphere. Julian Assange’s Wikileaks means that nobody trusts the State Department or its diplomats. Diplomacy depends on a certain amount of personal trust. All Hilary can do is apologise, but that cuts no ice, and Lockerbie will not go away, poisoning an already damaged relationship with a British government that seems quiet happy to allow the relationship to deteriorate further.

Now conflict is breaking out between Cambodia and Thailand, but they look towards China for guidance, as do so many countries around the world because they deal in real politics, not some fanciful dream world that we would like to see.

North Africa is unravelling, Tunisia, Egypt, all in a state of upheaval. But it is not Hilary who is centre stage, it’s Obama.  He’s setting the pace, telling the world of his great vision of Democratic Governments, but this will only bring more repression in countries that do not share his views on how countries should be governed, In Iran, opposition politicians are placed under house arrest, and this will be followed in other countries.

So Hilary how much longer will you survive? there is no good news in the forseeable future. Arab and Jew still hate one another, bombs are going off to destableise Governments, Iraq is still a mess.  Soldiers are still dying daily in Afghanistan, there will not be many friends left if Obama keeps on about democracy in the middle east.  Can you see that in Saudi Arabia? I bet you get many disapproving comments from them.  Perhaps it’s time to cut and run.

No Prophets here.

About michaeldouglasbosc

I am retired and live with my wife on a small olive finca in the middle of a forest in the mountains of Spain in Catalonya. I served 9years in the armed services, am an engineer and because of my love of navy sailing ships a naval historian of the 1700-1800's, plus the author of 10 books. When I retired I started writing adult books my first being A Soldiers Wind. Then came Stanley's story again adult books such was his life. Another book on life in the 1950's this very much an adult book. I have now returned to my love of the sea and my latest navy book 'A Plymouth Story' follows the life of Dr James Blackstock. But Clearing In The Forest is an historical fantasy set in the middle ages at the end of King Johns reign. All the books are published on Kindle and Create a Space in paperback. I have worked all my life and for relaxation I sailed a coastal yacht for many years, but deep inside me was a writer waiting to get out. So when I retired I started writing I find story telling both relaxing and - for me - a pleasure.
