A Moral Distance

Living several thousand miles from any geo-political dangers has always been a security blanket for the population of the USA. It has only recently had to live with a direct threat with the introduction of inter-continental missiles and bombers, that society in America had to mentally change, they did this by digging nuclear shelters in their back gardens.

Most people around the world have lived with this kind of threat, either from invasion or political unrest brought about through social change, and have just shrugged their shoulders and carried on with a normal life style, even when bombs are exploding within cities from bombers or terrorist of various shades.

When America was first attacked at Pearl Harbour its reaction was to inter all Americans of Japanese descent, but because Germany did not directly attack the USA, German-Americans were not interred. The treatment of these Japanese-Americans has been seen by history and future generations as being unfair and wrong, but it shows that direct response to a threat is required to be implemented by politicians there.

The reaction to terrorist threats inside America has been the  introduction of the Patriot Act, a grandly titled piece of legislation, indicating that anyone opposed to it was not a patriot. This act enshrined in law the right of Security and Military units to torture suspects who they believed were a threat to America, without any legal consequences to themselves. These same armed services who fought against Nazi oppression and Gestapo torturer’s are now classified by many as one and the same. Whether information gained in this manner is sound or useful is not the question it is how America is looked at by civilised countries. Is it still one of them? 57% of Americans are quite happy to see foreigners tortured to keep themselves safe and secure. Is this the image you wish to be portrayed to the world or don’t you care? are you only interested in yourselves? and the rest of the world is a nuisance which you would like to do without.

After all America is the place you all ran too, to get away from the conflicts and religious bigotry of Europe, the unrest of Asia and Africa, if you don’t care, fair enough, I understand that; but you are part of the  World, you are part of the Human Race and you owe something to your own morality and belief’s.

You  are better than that!

About michaeldouglasbosc

I am retired and live with my wife on a small olive finca in the middle of a forest in the mountains of Spain in Catalonya. I served 9years in the armed services, am an engineer and because of my love of navy sailing ships a naval historian of the 1700-1800's, plus the author of 10 books. When I retired I started writing adult books my first being A Soldiers Wind. Then came Stanley's story again adult books such was his life. Another book on life in the 1950's this very much an adult book. I have now returned to my love of the sea and my latest navy book 'A Plymouth Story' follows the life of Dr James Blackstock. But Clearing In The Forest is an historical fantasy set in the middle ages at the end of King Johns reign. All the books are published on Kindle and Create a Space in paperback. I have worked all my life and for relaxation I sailed a coastal yacht for many years, but deep inside me was a writer waiting to get out. So when I retired I started writing I find story telling both relaxing and - for me - a pleasure.
