The Structure Of Life

Another sad day is splashed across our television screens, the grief of families and friends and the tears of the World.

Once again nature has torn a course of destruction through the Plains States of America. Homes are flattened in great swathes, families huddle together for comfort, but it cannot alter the death it brings to all.  The grief ripping the heart out of families and communities alike.

Every year we see the same scenes, sometime in the same towns death on a unemaginable scale, children killed sheltering in buildings that they considerd safe, but were not.

In the 1960,s and 70, America spent billions of dollars building Silo’s thus making sure it’s missiles would be safe to launch in the event of a Soviet preemptive strike. These Silo’s were also built so they could withstand a direct impact from a nuclear missile.

Surely now in 2013 some of that technology could be used to safeguard children in school. Building structures inside cliffs or inside hills has become fairly common place, so why cannot municipal buildings in the Plains States utilise this technology. You don’t have to build an underground silo, just dig out a large surface area go down two or three levels then construct a steel and concrete structure. Then, using the earth to blend it in and planting over the top, this way it becomes a hill, blending in with its enviroment. Natural light can be directed inside the building so it does not have to be a great dungeon or a dark hole lit by fluorescence.

A structure built in such a way would stand for generations, generations that would survive a direct hit by a tornado. You could phone up the fire station only to be told it was destroyed by a tornado, your town hall and schools like wise. However, if built within the Earth they would be there for all time to shelter every one and you would know your children are safe and when you get home tonight all your family will be there.

You can afford it! Save little children from death and mutilation, save families grief and suffering. And me from crying.

About michaeldouglasbosc

I am retired and live with my wife on a small olive finca in the middle of a forest in the mountains of Spain in Catalonya. I served 9years in the armed services, am an engineer and because of my love of navy sailing ships a naval historian of the 1700-1800's, plus the author of 10 books. When I retired I started writing adult books my first being A Soldiers Wind. Then came Stanley's story again adult books such was his life. Another book on life in the 1950's this very much an adult book. I have now returned to my love of the sea and my latest navy book 'A Plymouth Story' follows the life of Dr James Blackstock. But Clearing In The Forest is an historical fantasy set in the middle ages at the end of King Johns reign. All the books are published on Kindle and Create a Space in paperback. I have worked all my life and for relaxation I sailed a coastal yacht for many years, but deep inside me was a writer waiting to get out. So when I retired I started writing I find story telling both relaxing and - for me - a pleasure.
