An Open Letter to Richard Branson

As I am sure you are aware being in the television business your self Freesat and The BSkyB system has moved to Astra2E and Astra2F satélites. These new generation satellites broadcast a narrow cone directed at the UK ,the footprint covers northern France up to Iceland and including the Irish Republic.

I understand Sky policy in this matter they believe people living on the continent are stealing from them but what they fail to see is that small companies purchase contracts in the UK and then sell them on the continent, taking a commission off the top Sky did not lose out but now those contracts will be cancelled and Sky will lose customers, and this is their response.

The BBC policy is somewhat confusing they have continually declined in moral authority and power having to do whatever the big money tells them to do.

The Independent companies position is even more strange, these are companies that depend on revenue generated by the number of customers they can reach so that advertisers can charge fee’s dependant on the area covered, now these companies advertise to sixty million people when before they could advertise to three hundred million where is the logic or financial sense in that.

Remember when you set up Virgin Atlantic and were fighting BA in the courts? well while you were engaged in that Ryanair and Easyjet stole all of BA’s European customers and became the largest airlines.

What this shows is if a company accepts the European Paradigm of open sky’s then a satellite broadcaster operating on a Pan European basis has a massive population which to sell in to. I am not just talking about ex pats, those working and those retired, but also huge numbers of Europeans who use English as a second language. There is a market out there of over six hundred million prospective customers, and at this moment in time there is  not an English language television channel covering the European airways. This is a business opportunity of a huge magnitude, the amount of television content that is available is immense, all that is needed is COURAGE.

About michaeldouglasbosc

I am retired and live with my wife on a small olive finca in the middle of a forest in the mountains of Spain in Catalonya. I served 9years in the armed services, am an engineer and because of my love of navy sailing ships a naval historian of the 1700-1800's, plus the author of 10 books. When I retired I started writing adult books my first being A Soldiers Wind. Then came Stanley's story again adult books such was his life. Another book on life in the 1950's this very much an adult book. I have now returned to my love of the sea and my latest navy book 'A Plymouth Story' follows the life of Dr James Blackstock. But Clearing In The Forest is an historical fantasy set in the middle ages at the end of King Johns reign. All the books are published on Kindle and Create a Space in paperback. I have worked all my life and for relaxation I sailed a coastal yacht for many years, but deep inside me was a writer waiting to get out. So when I retired I started writing I find story telling both relaxing and - for me - a pleasure.
